Mo Elmassalemah is an Associate Attorney with The Colwell Law Group, LLC, where he concentrates his practice in family and matrimonial law, litigation, and informal alternative dispute resolution. He approaches each client relationship with empathy, honesty, and openness, recognizing that family-law matters are among the most personal and emotionally challenging issues individuals face. Mo believes effective representation is not about selling a legal outcome, but about guiding clients through uncertainty with patience, clarity, and consistent communication.
What distinguishes Mo’s practice is his commitment to treating every client as a unique individual rather than a case number. He prioritizes accessibility and transparency, taking the time to explain unfamiliar legal concepts and ensuring clients feel informed and supported throughout the process. He strongly believes that trust and comfort are foundational to successful attorney-client relationships and brings that philosophy into every matter he handles.
Mo has years of experience handling a wide range of family-law matters, including divorce, child custody, child and spousal support, name changes, family offense proceedings, and informal mediation. He has developed a reputation within the firm for his ability to resolve even the most contentious disputes through strategic negotiation, earning the nickname “the magician” from colleagues for his success in achieving settlements in cases that appeared far beyond the point of resolution. While always prepared to litigate, when necessary, Mo firmly believes that thoughtful negotiation and settlement advocacy often lead to the most favorable and lasting outcomes for clients.
Prior to joining The Colwell Law Group, Mo practiced New York workers’ compensation law for approximately a year and a half, where he gained valuable experience advocating for clients in high-volume, procedurally complex matters.
Mo earned his Juris Doctor from Widener Commonwealth Law School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he was inducted into the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. During law school, he was awarded the York County Bar Association Diversity and Leadership Scholarship, which included the opportunity to intern with the Office of the York County Public Defender. He received his undergraduate degree, a BA in History with a Concentration in Political Science and Certificate in Pre-Law, from Siena College in Latham, New York.
Mo is admitted to practice law in the State of New York and is a member of the New York State Bar, Third Judicial Department. He remains actively engaged in the legal community through his membership in the New York State Bar Association, the Albany County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, where he continues to develop his professional skills and stay current on evolving areas of family and matrimonial law.
Mo comes from an Egyptian and Syrian background and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1999. He is bilingual in Arabic and maintains strong ties to his cultural heritage, which meaningfully influences both his personal values and professional approach. He was raised in a family that values perseverance and excellence—his father is a civil engineer who rose from associate to owner and partner of his firm, and his mother is one of the most successful dentists in the Hudson Valley. His younger brother currently studies cybersecurity at the University at Albany.
Outside the office, Mo enjoys staying active by exercising and playing in an adult soccer league. He has a passion for travel, film, history, and professional sports, and can often be found exploring museums, antique shops, and historical reenactments. He values time spent with family, friends, his girlfriend, and his cats, and is always working to improve his cooking skills.
Mo chose family law because it aligns directly with his goal of helping people navigate some of the most challenging transitions of their lives. Whether advocating for children’s best interests or guiding individuals through divorce and the restructuring of their futures, he views family law as a meaningful way to serve his community and make difficult circumstances more manageable. It is the practice area that best reflects the purpose that first led him to pursue a career in law.
