James Lesperance

James B. Lesperance, Jr. joined The Colwell Law Group as an Associate Attorney in June of 2021.

James was born in Albany, New York, and is a Columbia High School graduate, Class of ’82 (go, Blue Devils!). He initially began the pursuit of his bachelor’s degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, transferring to and graduating from Siena College, cum laude, in 1988, with a B.A. in political science and a minor in history. While at Siena, as the capstone of his political science degree, he interned in the British House of Commons with the Right Honourable Michael Grylls, Conservative Party, in the fall of 1986, meeting with various British statesmen and stateswomen from all political parties.

James wrote on to Law Review while at Syracuse University College of Law, graduating in 1991. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in August of 1992 and is admitted to practice in all four Federal District Courts of New York.

From 1992 to 2002, Mr. Lesperance worked both in Upstate and Downstate New York law firms, gaining experience in insurance defense, products liability defense, medical malpractice defense, dental malpractice defense, legal malpractice defense, plaintiff’s personal injury, criminal defense, matrimonial law, and family law.

Between 2002 and 2017, James was a solo practitioner, specializing in criminal defense, matrimonial law, and family law, with a strong focus on the Family Court Act (custody, support, interstate custody and support, paternity, family offense, neglect, abuse, sexual abuse, and severe abuse).

Following his solo career, James worked as attorney with the Warren County Department of Social Services from 2017 to 2020, prosecuting parents and guardians of children for support arrears, neglect, abuse, sexual abuse, and severe abuse under the Family Court Act and Social Services Law.

He has been a resident of the Town of Ballston, in Saratoga County, in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District for 16 years. He has been married to a project manager of a major Capital District architecture firm for the past 29 years and is the proud father of a multi-instrumentalist son graduating from Stony Brook University in 2022 with a B.A. in music, hopefully pursuing a doctorate in music theory in graduate school. He also has a golden retriever, Sam, who thinks he is human. His favorite activities are walking, hiking, cycling, kayaking, caving, waterfalling, reading, writing, genealogy, musicology, listening to as much music as humanly possible.  In his spare time, he is writing The Next Great American Novel.

After traversing many areas of law, James finally found his niche by helping his clients navigate the sometimes arcane aspects of the Family Court Act and Social Services Law to acquire the best result possible. Nothing is more gratifying than putting a smile on a client’s face for a job well-done.

James has perfected over 20 appeals. Some of James’ representative cases are included.
