N/aJames L. Breen (Jim) joined The Colwell Law Group in December of 2022 as the Legal Development Officer. Jim graduated from St. John’s University School of Law and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from St John’s University. Jim is admitted to practice in the State of New York, and in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Northern Districts of New York.
Jim is an accomplished attorney who maintained his own law practice for over thirty (30) years, with an office located on Long Island and in Saratoga County. During this time Jim’s practiced included matrimonial law, family law, estates and trusts, criminal law, and corporate law. Jim has represented clients in the New York Supreme Court, Family Court, District Court, and Surrogate’s Court, as well as the Federal Courts in the Eastern and Northern Districts of New York. Jim has also argued cases before New York State’s Highest Court, The New York Court of Appeals, as well as the Appellate Division for the Second and Fourth Departments. Jim has also served as the attorney for the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale and as Village Justice for eight (8) years.
As Legal Development Officer for The Colwell Law Group, Jim is responsible for the oversight and delivery of exceptional legal representation to the firm’s clients. He will be working with the individual attorneys to ensure that clients receive effective, efficient, and well-reasoned representation. Jim will also share in the responsibility for the professional development, training, and oversight of the individual attorneys at The Colwell Law Group LLC. Jim accepted his position with the The Colwell Law Group, LLC to assist the firm and its attorney in producing the finest quality work product and to provide the best legal representation to its clients.
As well as being an experienced practitioner, Jim has managed legal staff for over thirty (30) years. He has trained many junior associates and other legal staff in the proper manner in which to represent clients with an emphasis on honesty, hard work and an appreciation of the client’s needs. The Colwell Law Group, LLC realizes how these efforts will assure the continued success of the firm in representing its clientele.
On a more personal note, Jim enjoys spending his time in the Adirondack Park climbing and backpacking throughout the High Peak region, where his family has resided since coming from Ireland in 1845. He also spends time traveling throughout the United States and abroad and remains active by running with his friends.

Attorney Kevin Colwell (Kevin) and his firm helped my wife and I sell our house. It had been 9 years since I had sold a house so I needed to be guided through the entire process from the contract through to sale. A couple of snags arose during the deal where Kevin had to give us advice on how to respond, for example to buyer’s discovery of deficiencies in the structure. His advice proved to be right on target, keeping the buyers from dropping the deal. We exchanged many emails, with his responses to my questions or concerns coming promptly and with clear answers or explanations. His replies reduced the worries that I had while waiting to get a closing on the sale. We also spoke by phone after going through an administrative assistant in his office. Never was a request for information left unanswered. My wife and I couldn’t be in town for the closing, but we were very confident that with Kevin and his team there everything would go smoothly. It was the perfect ending for something like this, we didn’t have to be there and we were notified after the closing that it was all done without any last minute changes by the buyers.
